These images tell a story about the people of the Marquesas and their small islands surrounded by thousands of miles of open ocean. Art, dance, food and drink, family, outrigger racing and the newest electronics is what is at the center of their world. \r\n\r\nThe children are raised by a community. Left to wander alone it was trusted that someone would always be there to look after them-even near the shore. At the time we were there (2000), the more children a couple had, the wealthier they were. The French government subsidized the local people thousands of dollars annually per child to help them build up the community. Printing the negatives on Luminos Antique Ivory photographic paper gave the images the warmth I still love in my B&W photographic prints to this (2001)\r\n\r\nWhen I lived in Hawaii on a sailboat, I went on frequent hikes to a place where I felt safe and at peace. Surrounded by the natural botanica of the tropics, I could disappear into a different refuge than the ocean offered me at the time.\r\n\r\nThese images were inspired by Pu‘uhonua O‘ Honauanu on the Big Island of Hawaii and many of them were taken there. Rite of Water (2010-2012)
The water is one of the few places where we can learn to be both fragile and capable. My children have known the lure and the danger of the ocean their entire lives. I witnessed them learning to trust their power and be at peace with their vulnerability as they went through a unique rite of passage.
Each color panel represents the early phase or 'the cutting away.' This is where they are leaving what is familiar and comfortable. They are courageous and capable.
The black and white images represent the phase where the uncertainty occurs. Their perception is unclear. They are 'threshold people.' This is synonymous with rebirth.
Age of Enlightenment (2013)
As my son reached the end of his seventh year I became more aware of his increasing cognizance. According to Canon Law, this is the age at which children attain the ability to reason and have moral responsibility. By his eighth year he began to navigate the world in his own way and started to examine the concepts of death, betrayal, and the complexity of being human.
Holding on and letting go, and experiencing a loss of innocence began during this ‘Age of Enlightenment.’ When I talked to other parents of children approaching the same age, I began to realize how critical a turning point this is not only for the child but for the parents too.
I explore this familial transformation utilizing inspiration from The Braque Family Triptych, a religious altarpiece, to look at the shift in domestic connections. I create portraits using contemporary families with a child who has reached the age of reason.
The children wear a red piece of clothing as a metaphor for their relation to the adults by blood. Each child holds onto their favorite toy from childhood, some more closely than others, representing their readiness or hesitancy to accept their entry into this period of life. The parents express their own desire to hold on, let go or assist their child with tools they will need as they mature into adulthood symbolized by such objects as a book for knowledge, a dog for loyalty, and a pair of owls for wisdom.
These \"altarpiece\" style artifacts honor a significant yet often overlooked transition for every family.

Makai - Photographs Toward the Sea
Postcards from Nowhere [2009-2014]
A boat is a symbol of togetherness. Being on the same vessel means you're sharing the same fate. Onboard illustrates the time we were preparing to sail around the world with our young children. It expresses both the challenges and the romance of family life on board a sailboat.
When I was a child I read Dove by Robin Lee Graham and was inspired to hold this ambition into my 50s. (In 1965, 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham began a solo around-the-world voyage from San Pedro, California, in a 24-foot sloop. Five years and 33,000 miles later, he returned to homeport with a wife and daughter and enough extraordinary experiences to fill this bestselling book, Dove).
Divergent, 2020 (Resounding Silence-studies, 2016)
When your child struggles with anxiety and depression, it's hard not to be ashamed that as a parent you have passed on or caused this in him. This is a collection of our interactions as I witness the fear, sadness, isolation, and distress my son experienced from age 7 through 15 not always knowing exactly how to help but always holding him in the solitary space he needed to be in.
At The Edge (2014)
Keen on sailing lore and legends, I read that \"the romantics believed seafaring gave you a sense of nearing the eternal; it was the closest to the sublime you could experience.\" [Edmund Burke’s Philosophical Inquiry into the Origins of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757)].
I personally experienced this while spending time at sea mostly alone for 27 days in a small sailboat and longed to recapture that feeling.
Bound to land life, I chose to make this series along the shore of the vast Pacific Ocean, creating images yards from shore while my children swam at arm's length just out of frame.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a visual artist exploring personal histories and the tension of paradox to create narratives expressed as photographs, sculptural objects, and bound works.
Every day we choose how we will interact with those around us and define our boundaries. When we arrive at a threshold, we can decide if we are ready to leave behind the safety of the known for the fear of the unexplored.
Kristianne uses the photographic process as a language to move beyond her comfort zone in the safety of her hometown. She goes inward to explore how to live and love, maintain courage in the face of darkness and hold the intentions of others.

ARTIST BIO
Kristianne was born and raised in a California beach town and grew up in a family of professional travelers. After receiving her BFA in photography, she set off on her own adventures and honed her expedition skills in the mountains of California, Colorado, and Mexico. Soon after she met her husband they set out on a life-changing adventure together by sailing a 38' sailboat 8,000 miles from San Diego, CA to French Polynesia and north to Hawaii over the course of a year and a half.
Balancing her thirst for adventure, freedom, and spontaneity while settling down with a routine to raise a family has heavily influenced her work. She has settled in the California beach town for now and continues to work as an advertising photographer and visual artist.
When she's not in her studio or working on location, she is exploring the coast by sailboat with her husband and teenage children as they plan their next offshore adventure.

MY THRESHOLDS SOLO EXHIBITION
at Casa Romantica Cultural Center
San Clemente, CA
My solo show was an amazing experience. I enjoyed planning this one with heart and soul. The Casa Romantica requested the images be of non-human subjects to round out their ongoing Open Casa series so immediately I knew my ocean images would be at the forefront.
I started by making selections of images months in advance. I added those I knew people already connected with via group exhibitions, Instagram and images previously purchased. Since the exhibit was to take place at a cultural center in my hometown of San Clemente, I wanted to incorporate mostly images I created in the area.
Once I narrowed down the exact photographs I put them in order of how I wanted them displayed. As I developed the flow I realized that the concept-threshold-that runs throughout most of my work was showing up here. I had two rooms to display the work in with a threshold between them. I designed the exhibit to have dark, dramatic images on one side and bright, clean images on the other.
I visually laid out the exhibit in Photoshop using photographs of the walls where my work would hang. This really helped me 'see' the flow, balance, and feel of the show.
Then I selected sizes and frames. I knew several of them would be very large because of the vision of that series of work. I selected Artmill to print and mount 4 of the images 6-8 feet wide. They were created as float mounts because this presentation has no framing to distract your eye from the expanse of the images.
Smaller images were framed in handcrafted walnut frames by MetroFrame. These turned out absolutely beautiful. I purchased them unfinished and used tung oil to finish them myself. They had matching spacers so I printed everything with no borders and no mats. The spacers keep the print from touching the glass.
I had the light side of the exhibit utilized simple white frames which was done by San Clemente Art Supply.
It was amazing to see this exhibit come together after all the work and time I put into it. The investment was worth it and I felt like it was the thesis statement I never did during my time at university.

SubLiminal (Tests-2018)
SubLiminal considers ecological thresholds using plastic elements used to damage, obscure, and cast a shadow over areas on photographic prints of vignettes of our natural world.
This series is a statement about the mostly invisible damage being done to our planet by microplastics.
SELF Q
Self-quarantine has been the most stressful experience of my life. I'm pretty adept at managing stress since we have had a lot in our family over the years. But the past month has just been too much for my mind and body to manage. After a series of stressful events over and above pandemic panic, I had five horrifying anxiety attacks that felt like my body was possessed. The worst part was that several doctors suggested we isolate from our kids until we knew what was going on. This was heartbreaking. On day eight I ended up in the ER completely convinced I was dying from organ shutdown but was discharged for anxiety by the amazing, kind, supportive Mission Hospital staff.
Falling apart is so not like me and yet may be why I ended up there. It has made me realize how strong our minds really are over our physical well being. I have had experiences in the past while mountaineering and sailing that illustrated this clearly to me but nothing to this extreme.
I have been resistant to photograph during this time because I've felt absolutely horrible and I didn't want to remember it. But, I have had my camera close and captured some moments here and there. I am starting to find more solace in the simplicity of making images at home. While I miss the ocean terribly, I am incredibly grateful I can see it from my office every day with the company of my family. I have mostly been photographing on the 'view side' of our home and am excited to continue to do so throughout this historical time.

UNDER LOCKDOWN
We have been under lockdown orders for one month today. It has been tiring and stressful but I am finding a sense of peace at home. The sun sets and rises, the rain comes and goes, breakfast is at lunchtime and dinner soon follows. There is no way anyone will come out of this unchanged. I am meditating more, and finding gratitude for having a secret stash of the simple food items I used to be able to run out and grab at a moments notice.
My body feels out of sorts. I'm in tune with every twinge, spasm and ache and my mind is quiet but cloudy. I am trying to lean into the new norm to see if there is something I have been missing all my life. I am more grateful for my health than ever before. I have increasing gratitude for each family member, even as imperfect as our relationships are. I am more grateful for my art as an escape and for the gift of photography I still get to be a part of every day.
A PARALLEL TO A LIFE AT SEA
In May of 2000 my husband and I self-quarantined for 27 days at sea. Not because of a pandemic but because we wanted to sail around French Polynesia and discover lesser known surf breaks. Just like we're doing now in the time of a COVID-19 quarantine, we provisioned our boat with enough food for 45 days at sea in case our voyage took longer than expected. We also carried 150 gallons of fresh water and had solar panels to charge our batteries.
We had no long range radio and had no communication with the outside world. It was the ultimate in social distancing. It was just the two of us so we did six hour watches and when we were off watch we slept alone in the cabin while the other person stayed in the cockpit. The ultimate in isolating.
It was an unusually rough passage and even though we could not contract a communicable disease, we had a low grade seasickness that made us tired and nauseous all the time. This made it difficult to read and do daily activities. We were grateful to have wind that kept us moving and only motored for a few days through the ITCZ. This area was an otherworldly experience-kind of like what we're going through in the world right now.
I definitely think my experience with meditation and discipline I learned as a mountaineer helped me enjoy the long days at sea. Life onboard once we reached the islands inspired us to raise our kids sailing. This lifestyle helped us learn to appreciate a slower pace. We cherished the simple things in life like time with each other, being full time in the elements, being in tune with the rhythm of the tides and weather, and keeping meals and routines simple. I loved this life so much that I have been constantly trying to get back to it ever since. This voyage influenced my passion for making photographs in the ocean and for living a simple but mindful life.

BRINGING IT HOME
We have been quarantined for almost two months now. The first month was a huge adjustment because I came down with something awful. It came on feeling like a gastrointestinal virus. I was tested for COVID-19 but it came back negative. Yet, I continued to have horrible and terrifying symptoms for 10 days. I was awakened each night with cold sweats, chills, tremors, unbearable joint pain, chest pressure, elevated blood pressure, dizziness, nausea, unbelievable headache, weird buzzing throughout my body, burning sensations on my skin, pressure and a bubbling sensations in my sinuses, congestion, scratchy throat, heart palpitations, and an out of body fogginess. It felt like I was hypothermic or going into shock sometimes. My doctor told me to isolate and it was the most horrible thing not to hold my kids and be there for them. I was extremely fatigued and winded some days and then it would all go away almost where I felt normal then it would come back just as strong. Eventually, I was told to go to the ER but they ran some tests and took my vitals. Everything was normal so they sent me home with muscle relaxants and a diagnosis of anxiety!
I have slowly been feeling better since I left the ER but I still have recurring icky flu-like symptoms, scratchy throat, headache, upset stomach, chest pressure, and painful joints off and on. I know my body and I know my mind. I can't believe it was JUST anxiety. Anxiety doesn't cause scratchy throat, congestion, sinus pressure, and joint pain!! I do think I may have had anxiety over and above my illness because of the trauma my body was going through.
Since then I have been trying to see my home in a new way to help me stay calm and grounded. I am so grateful to be with hanging out my family again and to be enjoying their company, watching their favorite shows with them, or helping them manifest their creative ideas.
I started to look at the light in my home and see how created a new reality on fabrics and details at different times of day. I began loosening up and playing like I do in the ocean. I am making new images with the feeling of softness and strength inspired by the work I have been creating over the years in the ocean. I am also making new images of my family in moments of pause as they try to adjust to a new normal.

RITE OF WATER
I still remember riding over that first \"monster wave\" as a toddler in my yellow floatie ring and the thrill of looking down the face (and it was probably only 2' high) is as clear as day. I never knew how much this event affected me until I moved to Colorado but more on that next month when I'll be relaying my mountaineering stories here.
The ocean is where I learned to be both vulnerable and strong as a young girl. Spending significant amounts of time in the ocean is an important rite of passage in our community. This socialization also creates a strong bond and identity within the family unit-
even to our extended family of sailors and surfers. As a family of ocean-goers, we are instantly incorporated into a larger social group that honors vulnerability, courage, and a free-spirit.
My children have also known the lure and danger of the ocean their entire lives. From the time they could crawl I found myself photographing them in the waves and depths of the Pacific Ocean. I tell the story of them learning to trust their own power and vulnerability in my series Rite of Water.

I learned a long time ago that no one can create anything in a vacuum. We are all influenced by something and someone. I have been influenced by other artists, writers, photographers, musicians, and designers my entire life. I am grateful I realized at a young age the people who you are drawn to are important and will influence your vision in some small or large way. One of these people for me is Wayne Levin.
After sailing across the Pacific the second time-while I was living in Hawaii-I began to pay attention to artists creating ocean images in an unusual way. This is when Wayne's work caught my eye. I was incredibly drawn to the raw, calm power of his images. I knew I wanted to make work that overlapped natural intensity and quiet in my own unique way.
FALL FROM GRACE
As I stepped through corn snow on the Mountaineer's Route coming off the summit of Mt. Whitney my foot slipped and I began sliding down the 300' icy face toward a rocky ledge above a 1000' drop below. I looked up as I slid down, my speed increasing, and saw my climbing partners gasping in horror. I dug my elbows into the crumbly snow without slowing down. As soon as I reached the ledge my legs plunged into a hole filled with softer snow and I came to a stop.
These were the days of my intentional submersion in raw nature and mindful steps toward a life off the beaten path. I have since taken more careful steps along the way by managing my risks, for example, not jumping into rigorous exploits if I'm still recovering from a knee injury. We all have to learn to manage our risks-especially if we're parents and especially now in this time of upheaval and change. Yet this should not stop us from standing up for what we believe in. My passion is as strong as ever to explore, experience, and photograph natural places to raise awareness about their importance in our lives.

My parents were always taking off somewhere new and exotic-Africa, Egypt, Tahiti, Europe, Israel. Literally growing up in their travel agency, photography and poster design permeated my visual language. This exposure to travel images laid the groundwork for me before I even knew I wanted to be a photographer.
So when I was hired to photograph stories to accompany the True to Food webisodes being made for Signature Kitchen Suite across the country, it was the sweet spot of travel and photography I had always dreamed of. I traveled to New York, San Diego, Chicago, Napa, Virginia, and Oregon to photograph in a variety of environments.
It was an amazing experience to document the stories behind such innovative artisans-butchers, bakers, fishermen, winemakers, cheesemakers, and food scientists. Photographing them in their element was a perfect fit for my discreet and observant style. I learned about sustainable fishing, ancient grains, sous vide, and cheese caves. This aspect of photography has always appealed to me-learning about another way of life and understanding how we all have something important to share with this world.

My maternal grandfather had a huge impact on my career path. His passion for travel, design, and photography, was an integral part of my childhood. I spent hours with him in his 'studio;' a backroom of the huge building where El Camino Travel was located for decades. This room is also where I would eventually set up my darkroom. I would watch him paint with his airbrush, cut signage with his jigsaw, and engineer window display lighting effects. He was an artist, inventor, and adventurer and I will always cherish the special connection I have with him.

MAKAI (Toward the Sea)
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. -Lao Tzu
Or in my case, a journey of 7,000 nautical miles began with untying the dock lines. Since I was young I dreamt of sailing around the world. I eventually had my chance to set off across the Pacific Ocean when I was in my 30s. In May 2000, I sailed away from San Diego on a day like any other. But once out past the harbor entrance when all the other boats were turning back, mine was not. I was on a 38’ sloop with my boyfriend and we had spent the last year preparing for this voyage.
On our first passage ever we crossed the equator and navigated through the wild and crazy Inter-Tropical Convergent Zone (referred to the doldrums-but they were nothing of the like for us) heading south to Polynesia. We could smell soil the day before seeing the island of Hiva Oa after being at sea for 27 days. The journey was like nothing I’ve ever experienced and has changed me in ways I can’t explain. It has affected the way I see the world, make decisions about my future, and edges into my life every day.

After a year of sailing around French Polynesia, pulling the boat out for repairs, and then sailing up to and around the Hawaiian Islands, it was time to replenish the treasure chest. So we decided to stay in Honolulu and find work.
We lived on our boat in Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. Each day we would take a shower on the dock, catch The Bus to work then return \"home\" to jump off our boat and paddle out to some of the best surf in the world.
We often took The Bus to the North Shore to watch famous surfers compete at Waimea and Pipeline. During the summer months, these famous surf breaks were a calm flow of ocean lapping on the white sand of the North Shore. While photographing in these gentle wakes I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life making a living on and in the ocean.

When we were sailing from the Marquesas to Tahiti, we had to make a choice about which Tuamotu atoll to stop at. We were heading to Ahe but the weather was getting rough so we decided to duck in at Manihi. It was a lesser-visited atoll but we were going to reach the pass at slack tide before sunset to make for a safe and easy entrance.
We navigated through the shallow pass and around the many black pearl farm buoys and mainlines crisscrossing the lagoon. We found a spot to anchor and settled in for the night. At 2:00 am we were awakened by a loud thunk and the boat shuddering. When we went on deck to see what it was we discovered our sailboat was being pushed up against the edge of the reef on one side. We pulled on our anchor rode and the line came up with nothing attached. The twelve additional feet of rope we put out beyond the chain had chafed through and we were now floating free.
The next day after hours of looking for help, we hopped in the water to check the damage. There was a large chunk of fiberglass out of the bow and down the side of the hull but nothing very deep. During this swim I made this image of my husband in the lagoon next to our boat. Four months later I would have the film developed and discover this gem. It is one of the images that changed the way I see the world and how my vision would need to come to life in my work going forward.
GETTING LOST

I love the feeling of being completely alone in nature because of the time I spent 'getting lost' as a child. I roamed our neighborhood and hid in the overgrowth of a vacant lot collecting caterpillars and bringing them home to make houses for them out of boxes. I created forts in the bushes with cookware and decorations and lived in a castle in the huge tree in our backyard for hours into the evening.
When we spent time on our sailboat I would sail around the harbor alone in an 8' Sabot or walk around the base of the seawall catching crabs and looking for stingrays.
I remember always wanting more: more freedom, more nature, more alone time, more space, and new places to do that in. Photography has been the catalyst for me that we all need, giving me a sense of freedom with an excuse to go into nature, explore new places, and get lost.
VAGABOND LIFE
I have always dreamt of sailing away from civilization like the French sailor Bernard Moitessier who participated in the first non-stop solo sail around the world and almost won but decided to just keep going and Paul Gauguin, the avant-garde artist famous for being disowned by his wife for denouncing their middle-class French life and moving to Tahiti.
Both of them believed that getting away from civilization made for a more suitable life for themselves. Being self-sufficient, in their own rhythm, living off the grid, being at sea for months on end, and experiencing a lifestyle free of the usual trappings were the things that lured them away from civilization, stereotypical careers, and their families.
Of course, I could never go through with it now and have only dreamed of that kind of alternative life in my head. I'm a mother and wife for goodness sake! I do try to live a life like that where I can without completely leaving home. I have dabbled in it and experienced it happily when I climbed in the California and Colorado mountains alone and when I sailed to French Polynesia with my husband. In my series', At the Edge and Fragile Potential, I relive the sublime experience I had at sea and explore the fragility of nature and humanity in all of us.
Is this enough for me? For now, it is and has to be as I witness my family adapting to adversity and growing at every turn. I wouldn't miss that for a moment. So, I continue to escape when I can with my photography and am grateful for the somewhat 'civilized' life I have for now.

MORE LIKE A PLANT THAN LIKE A JEWEL

I believe this idea is at the heart of faith. Having faith to pursue your dreams (and maybe fail) and reflect on the story you live in takes courage. My series Fragile Potential (2017) is based on the philosophy of seeing nature as a reminder to stay open to challenges, allow yourself to be vulnerable, and remain in integrity with your aspirations. The words \"being more like a plant than like a jewel\" struck a chord with me just recently years after starting Fragile Potential. These continual connections inspire me to stay curious about why I make the work I do.
I continue to read, make photographs, review them, and read some more so that I can feel connected to the world. There is a discussion that happens between the words or images of others and the purposeful images I make. It helps me to feel like I am a part of something bigger than myself.

Even then I knew I wanted to be a photographer and after reading that book I knew I wanted to sail around the world. I feel like I have been on that path my whole life and along the way, I have taken many side trips. I feel like my goal is still the same but the depth and purpose of it keeps unraveling.
I have been inspired by many people along the way but most recently I read the book Swell and immediately connected with the life Liz Clark has created for herself. She has the same sense of independence, adventure, and tenacity I have had since my twenties. I haven’t always had the confidence to engage my dreams, but I have always had the dreams. Every person I meet who has followed their dreams through highs and lows brings me closer to achieving mine. Thank you Liz for living life wholeheartedly.
I have continued to make work in the ocean because it is the sweet spot of devotion and ocean when I'm there. Even though I haven't accomplished my youthful goal of sailing around the world I have stayed true to my dreams and know that I am living my life with integrity day to day.
HEALING POWERS
During the late 16th century, physicians began affirming the healing powers of the ocean for everything from heatstroke to melancholy. Over the past six months, I have been struggling with a mysterious and debilitating illness off and on and have put this prescription to use.
The beach has been my refuge helping to ease my pain. I trek to the shore where the crowds don’t go, past the outflow of access points along the coast. Sunbathing and splashing in the shore break has become a new ritual for me and my family. I honestly don’t know how I would make it through these days without my isolated ocean intervals.
At times I will make photographs to capture the feeling I am experiencing there. But, the most invigorating practice is simply being in the sun and surf. Sometimes I find when I put my camera down to play and be in the moment, I gain a new perspective that influences the way I make new work.
I can never be entirely connected to the islands that have touched my life. I only visited them for a couple of years, but they have truly changed who I am. I created a series of images that pay homage to the layers of mystery and beauty of the islands and people of the Pacific.
Hawai'ians were captivated by the concept of taming the ocean and discovering the mysteries beneath its powerful waves. The ancient Hawai'ian inhabitants looked to surfing as an integral part of life. It was a lifestyle and an art form. A strong sense of mindfulness went into all things related to surfing. To this, I can truly relate.
The Polynesians who made the arduous journey from Tahiti and the Marquesas to Hawai'i were exceptional watermen and women who brought a deep love and knowledge of the ocean with them. The Polynesians certainly influenced Hawai'ians with their customs including romping in the waves on their handmade paipo (belly) boards. Although Tahitians are believed to have sometimes stood up on their boards, the art of standing up while sliding on the waves was surely perfected in Hawai'i.
I will always cherish the memories I have surfing Hiva Oa, Moorea, and the South Shore of Oahu. It was a special time in my life when sailing, surfing, yoga, hiking, photography, and ceramics came together to create a fabric of mindfulness in my day to day living.
SALT LIFE
I grew up in a famous surf town but strangely enough didn’t learn to surf until I was 32. After a decade of traveling the world and living in the mountains, I returned to my roots.
Surfing has become a divine reward for coming home. Sitting out on the ocean waiting for a fresh set is some of the most meditative and peaceful time I spend alone. I thrill in anticipation for the perfect wave to achieve that feeling of strength and balance I can only compare to my experience as a gymnast when I was a teen. But aerobatics on the ocean far surpasses that.
I still cherish my memories of trekking in the distant mountains and quaint far-flung villages but the ease of escaping to glide on powerful waves right here in my own backyard is pretty darn marvelous.

In my late twenties, I began hiking and climbing in the Sierra Nevada. I wanted to follow in John Muir and Ansel Adam's footsteps. However, I had never been camping or even hiking in my life. I learned about backpacking in the Sierra Club's Wilderness Travel Course. I loved it so much I decided I wanted to become a mountaineer. Within the first two years, I had summited Lone Pine Peak, Popocatapetl, Iztacchihuatl, and Citlatlapetl, Mount Shasta via the Hotlum-Bolum ridge, and Mt Whitney by the east face-a 28 pitch vertical rock climb among many others.
On my first day hike ever, I started out with a pack full of extraneous stuff like guide books, extra clothes, multiple multi-tools, Power Bars, and a huge first aid kit. I carried way too much and suffered for it. By the time I was guiding for Colorado Outward Bound School I was confident enough to make the most of the bare minimum and even relied on finding food in my environment. I slept outside without a tent-sometimes in the snow. It definitely kept things simple and it taught me to be smart about planning. I quickly learned to focus on the important things like the beauty of the changing light on the craggy peaks or the delicate frost on a field of Columbine.
During this time in my life, I learned to get out of my comfort zone to find purpose and set new goals. In order to do this, I had to break through low self-confidence and concern about other's opinions. It was the first time I had pushed myself beyond my safe, low-risk life. Once again it's time for me to move beyond the fear zone and push into the growth zone.

Vulnerability and the tension of opposites are common themes in Kristianne's work.
In Vessel, she transforms photographic prints as sculptures to tell the story of her conflicted journey as a woman. She was compelled to set boundaries as a wife and mother who yearns for dauntless adventures and independence. Holding the tension of this longing and still wanting to be held and supported by her husband and children has been a difficult balance.
The origami objects are constructed from two-sided prints. Folding the paper represents transformation and interior and exterior self. They represent a dichotomy of stability and vulnerability while creating a dialog around holding, emptiness, and containment. I stitch some with thread to represent connection and restriction.
Tension of Flow. (2021)
Tension of Flow holds a place where both discord and grace coexist. After many years of confusion and turmoil, I felt compelled to resolve disenchantment around marriage, motherhood, and career. While trying to settle into the opposing paths as a moored mother and wife, my lifelong dreams of living untethered adventures of peril and enterprise began to drift away.
In the pursuit of bringing disparate parts of myself together and honoring the tension of my dilemma, I began to spend my time folding, crumpling, tearing, sewing, and forming photographic prints of the ocean crashing on a rocky shore.
I use lashing, hitching, and mending techniques from my sailing and mountaineering background to fashion the photographs, thread, and rope into symbolic forms and vessels.
The hands-on process allows me to express a new language without the constraints of precept. The finished pieces honor the tension of opposites that I have learned to reconcile during this tumultuous chapter of my life.

Growing up in a family of professional world travelers I had to find my own path to discover new places. When I sailed a 38' sailboat to French Polynesia, I knew this was the ultimate way to set foot on new land.
Approaching French Polynesia by sea after 27 days of isolation affects the way I know it. I feel more connected to the other voyagers who came to that magical place as well as the natives whose lives are lived on and in the sea for generations.
One of my favorite spots in the chain of 118 atolls and islands is Tahiti Iti. It is the smaller peninsula of the main island of Tahiti that is very remote. The road doesn't go all the way around the point and on one coast it ends at Teahupoo.

False Horizon, 2022
There is a mystery to our climate—visible yet elusive, immense yet intimate. To elevate awareness of its shifting nature and its impact on our lives, I create visual \"charts\" using photographs I made of the ocean and sky while at sea in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The ITCZ is a narrow band near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres collide. This atmospheric collision zone drives global weather circulation and is the birthplace of all hurricanes.
During a 27-day crossing of the Pacific Ocean, the weather dictated my life minute by minute. I recorded the surface of the ocean and the strength of the wind hour by hour. In that remote, ever-changing environment, I became attuned to subtle shifts—wispy cirrus clouds giving way to towering cumulonimbus, the ocean's surface rising and falling with no discernible rhythm, the threat of darkness always looming. These observations, once part of my physical navigation at sea, have become a metaphorical compass for navigating the uncertainties of life in a climate-altered world.
The ocean is not just weathered surface but engine and archive—its deep currents acting as conveyor belts that transfer heat across the globe, regulating temperature and weather patterns far beyond the horizon. When these systems shift, so too does the climate, affecting ecosystems, coastlines, and communities around the world. My work is an attempt to trace these movements, to sense what is usually sensed only by instruments or satellites, and to give form to their quiet but powerful influence.
Each layered archival pigment print is hand-marked to suggest shifting hurricane tracks and navigation plot lines—fragments of both human and planetary movement. The prints are then soaked in seawater collected from the ITCZ twenty years ago, allowing the salt to crystallize in direct sunlight. As it reacts with the carbon-based inks, a form of acidification occurs—mirroring the very process transforming our oceans today.
In this work, I map a dialogue between memory, observation, and planetary change. The ocean and its currents are both subject and collaborator, revealing what science quantifies and what the body intuits: that the climate is in motion, and we are adrift within it.

See the examples below.\n\nPut your 70mm lens on your camera or set your zoom lens to 70mm\n\nSet your camera to Aperture (A) mode\n\nSet your aperture to f 11. Because f11 is a ‘shut down’ aperture you will need plenty of light in order to have a shutter speed of at least 1/80 on your 70mm lens. If your shutter speed is below 1/80 you can raise the ISO setting OR you can put your camera on a tripod.\n\nTake an image focusing on the object in the foreground.\n\nNow set your aperture to f4.\n\nTake one frame with your focus on the object in the foreground.\n\n--\nNow put your 35mm lens on your camera or set your zoom lens to 35mm\n\nSet your aperture to f 11. This difference is caused by lens compression. Get close to a flower surrounded by other flowers, get close to a sculpture object with nothing else around it. Explore using aperture priority close to your subject and far away from your subject; with your subject close to other objects or far from other objects. \n\n2) Set your camera aperture to f11 or f16\n\t\n\ta. Keeping your aperture setting (and let the camera choose the shutter speed-you may need to increase your ISO) walk around an area outside and look for good opportunities to create an image with good depth of field. Step back from your subject and compose it while paying attention to the background. Try to eliminate any distractions behind your subject or use them to \"frame\" your subject as they will also be in acceptable focus. Move yourself a little to the left or right to adjust your framing.\n\n3) Set your camera shutter speed to 1/15 or 1/8\n\n\ta. Keeping your shutter speed setting (and let the camera choose the aperture-you may need to decrease your ISO) walk around and look for subjects that are moving-cars, people etc. Hold your camera steady and make an image with the slow shutter speed. Alternately make an image while you move the camera slightly from left to right-either following the moving subject or just somewhere along the beach looking out toward the ocean.\n\n4) Set your camera shutter speed to 1/250 or 1/500\n\n\ta. Keeping your shutter speed setting (and let the camera choose the aperture-you may need to increase your ISO) walk around and look for subjects that are moving-cars, people, water etc. Hold your camera steady and make an image with the fast shutter speed. \n\nGo back and look at all your images. Remember what you were trying to create with each camera setting. See what images turned out that you like. Maybe you had some nice surprises!
